Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my loans are Federal or from a Private lender?

Most student loans are Federal loans serviced by a company ( Nelnet, Navient, ect.) contracted by the Federal government. A private student loan is owned by the issuing bank (SoFi, Discover, ect.) and has their own terms not subject to the same terms as Federal Student Loan repayment programs. During your consultation, a Certified Student Loan Counselor will be able to pull up your existing student loans and further explain your situation and options.

What if I have more than one student loan?

Multiple loans can be consolidated into one loan and placed into the most advantageous program for your situation.

Do you refinance my existing loan(s) and convert them into a private loan?

No. There is no refinance and no conversion to a private lender. Your loan may be transferred to another Federal Student Loan Service Provider but the loan stays Federal. You stay eligible for any current or future Federal repayment program (which is not the case if your loan(s) go to a private lender).
